La Colombe
La Colombe is not the restaurant I would squeeze between a cableway slot and an evening tour. It is a destination meal on Silvermist Estate above Constantia, built around a long tasting-menu format and a deliberately theatrical style. If you book it, give the meal the space it deserves.

Why it is a destination meal
La Colombe sits on Silvermist Estate near Constantia Nek rather than in the City Bowl or Waterfront. The restaurant currently describes itself through the line “Food is our Theatre”, which is a fair clue to the format: presentation, sequencing and a long progression of courses are part of the experience, not decoration around a quick dinner.
Executive chef James Gaag currently leads the kitchen. Silvermist’s own restaurant page continues to position La Colombe as an independently operated fine-dining destination on the estate. I would combine it with a relaxed Constantia day, not a frantic cross-city checklist.
Food and menu format
The current menus are multi-course tasting experiences rather than a conventional starter-main-dessert à la carte dinner. The restaurant publishes both standard and vegetarian versions, with seasonal dishes changing over time. Current September 2026 menus include a weekday spring lunch option and a longer chef’s menu, but exact dishes and prices are explicitly subject to change.
That is why I would not build your decision around one famous plate from an old review. Book the format and the kitchen’s style: technically detailed, highly staged food with local and international influences. If you dislike tasting menus or want to choose one simple main, this is the wrong restaurant no matter how many awards it has.
Current booking rules matter
La Colombe currently requires a deposit to secure a reservation. Its published policy says a cancellation made no later than 48 hours before the booking can receive a full refund; later changes can carry a cost. The restaurant also currently states no BYO wine and no children under eight.
Those are useful planning facts, but they are also policies that can change. Recheck them on the booking screen before paying. If your itinerary is weather-sensitive, remember that a restaurant deposit is less flexible than a casual walk-in meal — do not build a risky mountain day with no buffer immediately before a hard-to-move reservation.
Getting there
Silvermist Estate is on the Constantia/Hout Bay side of the mountain. I would use a rideshare, private transfer or designated driver if the meal includes wine. The route is not the place to improvise after a long tasting menu.
If you are coming from the Waterfront or City Bowl, allow margin for traffic rather than trusting one optimistic map estimate. If you are already touring Constantia wine estates, avoid overloading the day with multiple heavy tastings before dinner.
How much time to allow
This is a multi-hour meal. I would leave the surrounding block of the itinerary clear and treat the reservation itself as the evening or lunch event. Tasting menus slow down when you add wine pairings, conversation and course explanations, and rushing the staff because another booking waits elsewhere defeats the point.
If you have theatre tickets, a sunset cruise or an airport transfer later the same day, choose a different meal unless the timings are genuinely generous.
Vegetarian, allergies and children
A vegetarian tasting menu is currently published alongside the standard menu. That does not mean every dietary requirement can automatically be accommodated, so tell the restaurant about allergies or restrictions before the booking and confirm what is possible. Fine-dining kitchens can adapt many things, but they need warning.
The current child policy excludes children under eight. For older children or teenagers, I would still ask whether a long tasting menu is something they will actually enjoy before turning a family evening into an endurance test.
Who it suits
Book it for: a special occasion, serious food interest, a long lunch that anchors a Constantia day, or a traveller who enjoys the theatre of a tasting menu.
Skip it for: a quick bite, a tight budget, a group with incompatible dietary needs that have not been pre-cleared, or anyone who resents fixed-format dining. Cape Town has plenty of excellent food that does not require a deposit and several hours.
How I would plan the experience
Book first, then build the day around it. Confirm the current menu, deposit, cancellation conditions, dietary notes and transport. If lunch is the booking, keep the morning simple. If dinner is the booking, do not gamble on a late-running Cape Point or Robben Island excursion beforehand.
The current menus also state a discretionary service charge. Check the live bill and booking information rather than double-tipping automatically. For broader local payment customs, use our Money, Cards & Tipping guide.
Cheers, Carpe Diem & let the tasting menu own the afternoon! 🍻⏳🍽️
