The setting is the point

Camps Bay Retreat describes itself as a luxury hotel and private nature reserve, and that is a more useful way to understand it than the word “hotel”. The estate sits above Camps Bay among established trees with mountain and ocean views, so the atmosphere is deliberately removed from the busy beachfront strip below.

If your image of Camps Bay is cafés, cocktails and walking straight across the road to the sand, this property gives you a different version of the neighbourhood. I like that distinction: you can still use Camps Bay as your base without living inside its busiest evening corridor. The price is a less frictionless relationship with the beach.

Accommodation is not one-size-fits-all

The current property is spread across different buildings and accommodation styles, including the historic Earl’s Dyke Manor, the Deck House, rooms in villas and Forest Pods. That means two guests can both say they stayed at Camps Bay Retreat and have quite different room layouts, views and distances from facilities.

I would therefore book by exact room category, not by the hotel name alone. Study the current room photos, floor or building location, bathroom setup and access route. If ocean view, outdoor space or a particular heritage feel is the reason for booking, get that confirmed in the category description rather than assuming it applies estate-wide.

Wellness is more than a treatment room

The retreat currently operates Mint Spa, with massages, facials and body treatments, plus sauna, steam and pool facilities listed in its FAQ. It also markets Forest Spa Pods among the trees with private wood-fired hot-tub time, and a forest-bathing experience built around its mountain nature pool. Non-resident spa bookings are possible subject to availability.

There is also a private padel court. That mix tells you the property is designed for people who intend to spend meaningful time on the estate. If you only need a bed between day tours, much of the reason to stay here disappears.

Food and downtime

Bellas Restaurant is the current in-house restaurant, with seasonal menus and an afternoon-tea/scone offering promoted by the hotel. I would treat it as useful flexibility rather than an excuse never to leave Camps Bay: the beachfront and wider city still have a much broader food scene.

On the other hand, an on-site meal is valuable after a full Table Mountain or Cape Peninsula day when you do not want to organise another transfer. Check the current restaurant hours and reservation requirements rather than assuming hotel dining runs continuously.

Beach access and mobility deserve a realistic look

The hillside, forested setting is part of the appeal, but it is also the practical question I would ask before paying. The estate connects different areas — including via a suspension bridge between key accommodation zones — and the topography is not the same as a flat promenade hotel.

If you have reduced mobility, travel with a pram, carry heavy equipment or simply dislike slopes, ask the property which room category and route suits you. Do not rely on a generic accessibility assumption. If effortless beach access is the whole holiday, compare a property closer to the Camps Bay strip.

Getting around from Camps Bay

Camps Bay is close to central Cape Town on a map, but traffic and the mountain shape real journey times. Rideshare and private transfers are often simpler than driving for evenings in the City Bowl or Waterfront. A rental car becomes more useful if you are building the Cape Peninsula, Winelands or other dispersed day trips into the stay.

For the beachfront itself, decide whether you are happy with the property’s position and the walk/transfer pattern before booking. “In Camps Bay” covers everything from immediate beach-road frontage to elevated residential slopes, and those are different holiday experiences.

Who I think it suits

Strong fit: couples, a quiet celebration stay, travellers who want gardens and wellness between sightseeing days, and anyone who prefers a secluded estate feel to a large conventional hotel.

Think twice: travellers who want nightlife on the doorstep, families whose priority is flat and immediate beach access, visitors with mobility needs who have not confirmed the exact room route, and budget-conscious travellers who will spend almost no time at the hotel.

What to verify before booking

Ask the exact questions that match your priorities: Which building is the room in? Are there stairs or steep paths on the normal route? What view is guaranteed? Is breakfast included? Which spa facilities are included versus separately booked? What are the cancellation terms? If you travel with a pet, the hotel currently has a pet policy and asks for details in advance, so do not arrive assuming every room accepts animals.

Also check current renovation or maintenance notices. A nature-heavy estate evolves, and a beautiful generic property photograph tells you less than the exact room category and access notes.
