Cape Town pools open daily for the school holidays — five facilities remain closed

Cape Town's public-pool school-holiday programme starts on Wednesday, 23 September 2026. The City says pools that are operating during the holiday period will open daily from 10:00 to 17:00 through Monday, 5 October, giving families, residents and visitors a larger daytime window than the reduced schedule that follows later in spring.

The important catch is that five facilities are not part of the holiday opening. Westridge, Bellville Central, Mnandi, Athlone and Vulindela swimming pools remain closed. Four are undergoing major maintenance or improvement work; Vulindela is a longer-term closure tied to redesign and redevelopment planning.

School-holiday hours: 23 September to 5 October

The City's 19 September announcement sets the school-holiday operating window at 10:00–17:00 every day from 23 September to 5 October. Its current swimming-pools information page also tells users to check the live schedule for updates, which is worth doing before travelling across the metro for a particular facility.

After the school holidays, the City says public pools will move to a reduced timetable until 1 December 2026: 13:00–17:00 Wednesdays to Fridays and 10:00–17:00 Saturdays and Sundays. That later timetable is separate from the daily holiday opening now in force.

The five pools that remain closed

What this means if you are planning a swim

For residents, the daily holiday schedule makes public pools a practical school-break option, but it also means the most convenient open facilities may be busier than usual. For visitors, City pools can be useful on hot or windy days when a beach day is less appealing, but individual facilities vary in size, amenities, access and location.

The safest planning sequence is simple: choose a pool, check the City's current swimming-pool schedule before setting out, then allow for normal travel time. Do not assume that a facility listed in an older guide is operating merely because the broader holiday programme has begun.

Safety and supervision

The City is recruiting seasonal lifeguards as it prepares for the busier festive period. For the September school holidays, its advice is straightforward: listen to lifeguards, follow pool rules and make sure children are supervised at all times. Those are operational instructions, not optional etiquette.

Pool opening is also distinct from beach or coastal-water conditions. If your alternative plan is the ocean, check the relevant beach and water-quality information separately rather than treating a City pool announcement as a signal about coastal conditions.
