Cape Town's summer events calendar is filling quickly for October 2026, giving residents and visitors several very different reasons to plan days and nights out across the city. Cape Town Tourism's current summer guide, published on 29 September, highlights a month that moves from rugby at DHL Stadium to movies under the stars, a pan-African design gathering at the V&A Waterfront and giant kites over Ottery.

This is not an exhaustive list of everything happening in October. It is a practical shortlist of the bigger confirmed events that are especially useful for visitors deciding when to be in Cape Town, where crowds may build, and which nights are worth booking ahead.

October at a glance

  • 9 October: Century City Summer Night Market, 16:00–21:00 at Century City Urban Square.
  • 10, 17, 24 and 31 October: DHL Stormers home matches at DHL Stadium.
  • 15 October: The Galileo Open Air Cinema begins its 2026/27 season across Cape Town and the Winelands.
  • 21–24 October: Pan Afrikan Design Week at Workshop17, Watershed, V&A Waterfront.
  • 24–25 October: the 32nd Cape Town International Kite Festival at Youngsfield Military Base, Ottery.

Four Stormers home dates at DHL Stadium

The DHL Stormers have four home fixtures in October, all at DHL Stadium. Their official ticket hub lists the Hollywoodbets Sharks on 10 October at 16:00, Bristol Bears on 17 October at 16:15, Scarlets on 24 October at 16:00 and Ulster on 31 October at 14:45.

For travellers staying around the Waterfront, Green Point or City Bowl, those Saturdays are worth noting even if rugby is not on the itinerary. Big stadium fixtures can change the feel of the precinct and increase traffic and demand around nearby restaurants and bars. Ticket holders should use the official Stormers ticket hub for the latest match-day instructions rather than relying on older transport advice.

Outdoor cinema returns from 15 October

The Galileo Open Air Cinema returns on 15 October 2026 and runs to 15 May 2027. The operator says the new season uses venues across Cape Town and the Cape Winelands, with films ranging from classics and blockbusters to rom-coms and family titles.

Kirstenbosch is among the early venues, with the current schedule showing films from 15 October onward. The concept is simple: outdoor cinema, picnic-style food and drinks, and a movie after sunset. Venue rules vary, especially around outside food and alcohol, so check the specific screening before packing a picnic.

Pan Afrikan Design Week comes to the Waterfront

From 21 to 24 October, Pan Afrikan Design Week is scheduled for Workshop17 at the Watershed in the V&A Waterfront. Cape Town Tourism lists tickets from R250 and describes the 2026 theme as How do we design to thrive?

The programme brings together designers, educators, students, entrepreneurs, cultural practitioners and community builders. It is a different kind of visitor event from the city's large sports and entertainment calendar, and it gives design-minded travellers a reason to spend more time around the Waterfront beyond the usual shopping and harbour circuit.

A colourful weekend in Ottery

The 32nd Cape Town International Kite Festival runs on 24–25 October at Youngsfield Military Base in Ottery. Organiser Cape Mental Health says the weekend will feature giant kites flown by local and international participants, kite-making workshops, family entertainment, food vendors, interactive activities and a children's amusement park.

The festival also supports Cape Mental Health's work and uses the event to raise awareness around mental health. That makes it both a family day out and a community fundraiser rather than simply a kite display.

An earlier low-key option: Century City night market

For a smaller start to the month, Cape Town Tourism lists the Century City Summer Night Market on 9 October from 16:00 to 21:00. It is a cashless evening market with street food, artisan stalls and live music at Century City Urban Square, with another date scheduled for 13 November.

What this means for an October trip

October is often a transition month in Cape Town: longer days and warmer weather arrive, but conditions can still change quickly. The event calendar adds another reason to avoid over-planning every evening. If one of these dates matters to you, book the event first and build the surrounding day around its neighbourhood.

For the Stadium dates, allow extra time around Green Point and the Waterfront. For Galileo, verify the exact venue and screening rules. For Design Week, the Watershed is easy to combine with a Waterfront day. For the Kite Festival, Ottery is outside the central tourist core, so plan transport rather than assuming it is walkable from the City Bowl.

Event details can change. This story was checked on 3 October 2026 against Cape Town Tourism's current summer guide, the official DHL Stormers ticket hub, The Galileo, Pan Afrikan Design Week's Cape Town listing and Cape Mental Health's festival page. Recheck the organiser before travel or purchase.
